Planes, construction and arrangement of.-The lower planes of a biplane are made only “ to ¢ the area of the upper planes, the trailing edges of the upper and lower planes being in vertical alinement. The construction of the planes is such as to render interplane struts and bracing unnecessary. Figs. 1 and 4 show upper catahedral planes 25 and lower dihedral planes 26 detachably mounted on the fuselage by passing the spars 29 through brackets 31, Fig. 9, on, or grooves in, the longerons 2, the inner ends of the spars being connected bv sleeves 32. The spars are secured in the brackets 31 and sleeves 32 by means of pins 33 locked by catches 35. The upper plane is arranged below the line of vision of the pilot. The spars 29 comprise steel bars or strips arranged edgewise, and they are connected by bracing 30. Cars and cabins.-The upper surface of the fuselage is made to conform to the curvature of the crest of the upper plane. Framework.-The fuselage framework may be composed of metal tubing of rectangular crosssection jointed by welding.
