Abstract

Solid particles dispersed in a fluid are separated according to size by passing the dispersion through a porous bed of solid particles of larger size than the particles to be separated, eluting the bed with further dispersing fluid to cause the particles to pass right through the bed and collecting the effluent from the bed wherein larger particles are first removed from the bed and successively smaller particles are subsequently removed therefrom. It is believed that the larger particles leave the porous bed first because they are not delayed in the smaller portions of the fluid passageways where the effluent flow is slower. The bed may be constituted by glass, plastics or metal particles, examples of which are given. In a particular example particles of a synthetic, e.g. polystyrene, latex is dispersed in deionized water and the dispersion stabilized by the addition of sodium lauryl sulphate. A column is packed with sulphonated, crosslinked polystyrene beads and deionized water from a reservoir is passed through the column by means of a syringe pump via a sample injection chamber. A sample of the dispersion is then introduced through the sample injection chamber. The discharge from the column is connected to a solids detector in the form of a light scattering apparatus which detects turbidity in the effluent from the column and records it on a strip chart. The plot on the chart indicates sharp separation between large and small particles.
