Abstract

1,273,785. V.T.O.L. Aircraft. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT OF CANADA Ltd. 12 June, 1969, No. 29796/69. Heading B7G. A V.T.O.L. winged aircraft has means 22, 23 inboard of the fuselage for generating vertical thrust gases which are ducted to duct structures 35 outboard of the fuselage and having slots 36 for directing the thrust gases downward through the gaps 36a, the two streams joining to form a longitudinal downwardly directed thrust stream 43, the centre of vertical thrust of which passes through the c. of g. A, the wing structure 44 having forward extensions about the slot structure to cause the centre of lift of the wing structure to coincide with the c. of g. Valve flaps 47 are provided in the wing structure so that gas discharged from the slots 36 induces turbulent air from the upper wing surface to maintain lift stability at transition speeds. The duct structures 35 on each side each have chambers connected to the generators 22, 23 and the slots 36 comprise outlets from each chamber. A coanda deflector is provided adjacent each slot and lower surface valve elements 52 allow further secondary air to be induced at 59, when open for the discharge of lift gases.
