Magnetic instruments; receivers fitted with horns.-A telephone receiver fitted with a phonographic sound-box has a diaphragm of oblong form supported near its edges by adjustable springs. As shown in Fig. 1, the oblong diaphragm c is supported on springs f resting on arms d projecting from the upper end of a non- magnetic tube b. A bar magnet surrounded by coils in the telephone circuit is enclosed in the tube b. A cranked or other suitably-shaped needle rests on the diaphragm and is secured to the stylus bar of a sound-box h, the neck i of which communicates with a horn. The soundbox is supported by a lever k<1> pivoted to a pillar k and adjustable by means of a screw-threaded link o. An adjustable spring r regulates the pressure of the needle j on the diaphragm c. In a portable form of the apparatus, suitable for use by deaf persons, the trumpet is omitted and the sound-box neck is fitted with an earpiece. The magnet is of shorter form and is mounted on a flat resilient plate, which also carries the sound box and earpiece. A pocket battery may be used.
