Cigarettes with filter tips are rolled in a machine having an apron 28 and a magazine 53 for the supply of filters and measured quantities of tobacco. The magazine consists of a bottomless frame 56 slidable between guides 57 over a platform 54 and provided with transverse partitions 62 forming tobacco compartments 61 at each end of which, outside walls 59, are further compartments for filters. The magazine is movable in increments, determined by spring-loaded detents (not shown), to bring successive compartments 61 beyond the edge of the platform 54 to allow a tobacco charge, sufficient for a doublelength cigarette, and a pair of filters to fall into a pocket 33 of the apron, the tobacco falling between a pair of plates 36 and the filters outside these plates. The apron is slotted to receive the plates 36, and plungers 41 are provided by which the filters can be pressed inwardly to abut the plates. A cigarette paper 71 is placed on a part of the apron overlying a table 17 and held thereon by a pair of spring fingers 76. A roller 24 movable in slots 27 by external knobs (not shown) causes the tobacco charge and filters in the pocket 33 to be carried along the table and rolled in the paper 71, a gummed edge of which may be moistened by a sponge &c. The roller 24 lifts the fingers 76, which are pivotally mounted at 78, and entrains a pair of projections 87 on a slide 83 so that when the rolled double cigarette is discharged from the apron it falls onto a surface 84 and is held by a curved extension 23 of the table, slotted to allow the passage of a knife 82, while the slide is returned to cut the double cigarette into two single cigarettes 92 which are collected on the slide. When the roller 24 is returned to its starting position it engages a spring-loaded lever assembly 49 pivoted at 44 to cause it to swing to engage the apron and reform the pocket 33. The machine is then ready for the next incremental movement of the magazine.
