Abstract
1,272,831. Releasable fastenings. LIBU SHOVEL & CO. A.G. 23 May, 1969 [27 May, 1968], No. 26476/69. Headings E2A and E2B. A fastening assembly comprises a stud 1 and a body 3 containing a socket, the stud comprising a tapering housing 2, a latching member 4 pivotable about a pivot pin 5 between a releasing position in which said latching member is received within the housing and a latching position in which a portion of the latching member projects out of the housing, an operating member 14 which, when operated, allows the latching member to be returned from said latching position to the releasing position, the operating member having a portion movable within the stud and directly or indirectly operable from outside the stud, the said socket being tapered to receive the stud, an enlarged portion of the socket being adapted to receive the projecting portion of the latching member when in the latching position, the portion of said operating member movable within the stud having a surface suitably shaped for allowing the latching member to return to the releasing position, there being provided within the stud, means 15 urging the projecting portion of the latching member towards the latching position and urging another portion of the latching member into engagement with the said surface. In a first construction Fig. 3 the enlarged portion has two frusto-conical surfaces one of which 14a, upon movement of the operating member to the left, as shown, moves two of the latching members 4 against the bias of springs 8 to their releasing positions. The other frusto conical surface abuts the latching members when the operating member is moved in the opposite direction to limit the movement of the operating member. The operating member as shown is moved from the narrow end of the stud which is of frusto conical shape by pulling a knob 16a; the knob contains a member 18 which is rotatable and axially slidable in the knob 16a. The member 18 when pressed inwardly with the knob and rotated relative to the knob so that a pin carried by it engages a slot in the plug prevents releasing movement of the knob so that the fastening members are in their fastening positions. The member 18 can be part of a cylinder lock. The means 15 is a spring trapped between the operating member 14 and the member 18 and which normally urges the two members apart. In an alternative construction Fig. 9 the operating member has two oppositely disposed but otherwise identical frusto conical surfaces so that the members 4 are moved to the releasing positions by movement in either direction of the operating member. A further construction is described Fig. 7 in which the operating member is rotated instead of being moved axially to move the members 4 between the fastening and releasing positions, the recess being shaped so that its base is further from the axis in one position of rotation than in another position 90‹ displaced from that position. In all the embodiments referred to above the housing 2 is of a frusto conical shape but as an alternative the housing can have the shape of a truncated pyramid. The assembly is stated to be suitable for fastening a door of a motor vehicle in which case in one form the stud is attached to the door pillar and the body 3 is provided in the door. The stud however can alternatively be attached to the door with the body provided in the door frame and in this case the door is provided with a pivoted handle which bears on the end of the operating member to depress it to withdraw the members 4 from their latching positions. As shown in Fig. 14 the handle is mounted on a bracket 36 which is slidable in a guide on the door against the bias of a spring and it is necessary to first slide the bracket against the bias of the spring to position the handle above the operating device.
