Abstract

1,272,653. Power steering. BENDIBERICA S.A. 22 Sept., 1969, No. 46602/69. Heading B7H. A servo-steering mechanism comprises a shaft 15, a surrounding sleeve 20 having ports therein, and an internally toothed spindle 8 into which the shaft extends, the shaft having therein at least one longitudinal groove 25, (41) with sides which can engage with a tooth 16 of the spindle and which groove acts to selectively establish communication between the ports in dependence upon the relative radial positions of the shaft and sleeve. The shaft includes a torsion bar 17 connected by the pin 18 to shaft 8 which co-operates via re-circulating balls 9 with a slide 7 having teeth 6 meshing with those 5 of a toothed sector 4 connected to a steering bar. In its neutral position, shaft 15 interconnects inlet and outlet ports 27, 28 respectively. However, during steering movement of shaft 15 in one direction fluid entering port 27 finds a way, via the ports in the sleeve 20, and groove 25, to tube 30 and hence enters chamber 14 to move the slide 7. Rotation of shaft 15 in the other direction causes slide 7 to move in reverse manner.
