Abstract

1,272,568. Welding by fusion. FOSTER WHEELER JOHN BROWN BOILERS Ltd. 7 Oct., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 47468/68. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H5] A head 18 for an electric arc welding torch for rotation about a butt joint between tubes 14, 16 by a torch body 12 comprises an electrically insulating and heat resistant block 20, e.g. a ceramic such as boron nitride, with an electrode holder 24 mounted in a recess 22 in the block, the block having a bore 28 through which a non-consumable electrode 26 projects. Cooling water from an inlet 34 passes through a passage 32 in the holder 24 to an outlet 36. The holder 24 is made of metal and electricity is conducted to the electrode from a lead 38 connected to the inlet 34. Shielding gas is supplied to the electrode via an inlet 42, a passage 40 in the electrode holder, outlets 44 from the passage and then along a recess (46), Fig. 4 (not shown), in the block to the bore 28. The holder is retained in the block by lugs 50 fitting in recesses 52 in which they are retained by a pin 58. The head is attached to the torch body 12 by a bracket (70), Fig. 5 (not shown), which has arms (72) engaging in recesses (73) in the head, the arms being clamped together by lock nuts 76. The head is biased toward the tubes 14, 16 by a spring 80 and the distance of the electrode from the tubes is controlled by a roller 82. The electrode is held in position by a grub screw 30. To prevent cracking of the block a recess 59 is provided in the block to define a lip 60 around the bore 28.
