A crushing machine for breaking up brittle material and in particular anode butts formed in aluminium smelting comprises a table or grate 1 Fig. 1 having openings 1', a holding means 3 relatively movable with the grate to hold the material and striking tools 2 which impact the material while the material is held fast by the pressing together of the grate and holding means. As described, material G is raised against the holding means 3 by rams 5 so that sharp upper edges of the elements 6, 7 which form the grate 1, press hard against the material. The tools 2 are preferably actuated intermittently and may operate sequentially. When the material is crushed limit switches 4a, b are actuated by the gate, and control return of the grate to its original position. The grate may be vibrated between striking cycles or be lowered and lifted, to clear the apertures in the grate. In a second: embodiment, an anode butt attached to a yoke H' and rod H" is supplied to the crusher by a travelling crane 20, Fig. 2. The grate elements 26b, 26c are inclined and the striking tools 22 are mounted in a group of two or more on a common bracket 28 pivotable about an axle 24a, b respectively. The material is clamped by the holding member 23. In a further embodiment material to be crushed is supplied via a conveyor Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), and the holding member is movable.
