Abstract

1,272,384. Jet lift engine assemblies. MESSERSCHMITT - BOLKOW - BLOHM G.m.b.H. 2 July, 1970 [7 July, 1969], No. 32146/70. Heading B7G. A jet lift engine assembly is arranged in a V/STOL aircraft to provide two downwardly directed jets one on each side of the aircraft for roll control and comprises: a jet engine 11 pivotally mounted on links 14 so as to discharge an efflux from the discharge end of the engine casing which thereby moves laterally; and a bifurcated duet 20 mounted on the engine and the fuselage of the aircraft, for lateral movement when in use, to receive the efflux from the engine and deliver said two downwardly directed jets. The duct 20 is mounted in the engine casing by a spherical bearing 24 and is provided with a ring 22 mounted to the fuselage of the aircraft by links 23 which constrain the duct to move only laterally when in use. Movement of the duct is caused by pivoting bell cranks 21 mounted on the engine casing. When the engine 11 is in its central vertical position, Fig. 2, the duct may be pivoted about the axis of the engine from an outer operative position (shown in chain lines) to a stowed inoperative position (shown in solid lines in Fig. 2).
