Abstract

1,272,316. Polyamide acid filaments. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 1 July, 1969 [2,July, 1968], No.33232/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Thermally stable filaments are produced by dry or wet spinning solutions of a polyamide acid having a recurring unit represented by the general formula wherein #y/#x < 7/3, R 1 is a tetravalent aromatic radical, the linkages of (1) and (2) are each bonded to the adjacent carbon atoms of the aromatic nucleus similarly to the linkages of (3) and (4), R 2 is a trivalent radical containing at least two carbon atoms, R 3 and R<SP>1</SP> 3 is each a divalent radical containing at least two carbon atoms, R 4 is a tetravalent radical containing at least four carbon atoms, X is -O-, -S-, -COO-, or -NH- and R 5 and R 6 are each hydrogen or an alkyl group or acetyl radical. The resultant filaments are heat-treated before during or after stretching the yarn, the heat treatment being carried out at a temperature above 200‹ C. and in the final stage at a temperature not lower than the temperature at which the ring closing degree of R 5 X and of R 6 X becomes more than 50% after 10 minutes heating. Stretching may be effeeted in one or two stages, using, e:g. hot liquid for the first or early stage and passage over a hot plate for the second stage. The filaments may be formed by extruding a solution of the polymer having a concentration of over 15% by weight into a bath of an aqueous solution containing over 30% by weight of calcium chloride and maintained at a temperature of 50‹ to 120‹ C. The filaments may be formed by dry sprinning a solution of the polymers having a viscosity of more than 800 poise at 25‹ C. The filaments formed may have a recurring ring structure having the general formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are each as previously defined. #y/#x in this formula may be <7/3, the ring closing degree of X may be more than 50% and the tenacity of the filaments may be higher than 1.5 g/d.
