Abstract

1,272,301. Tetrafluoroethylene polymer/polyimide composition. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 Jan., 1970 [21 Jan., 1969; 5 March, 1969], Nos. 3326/69 and 11711/69. Headings C3P and C3R. A composition useful for bearings comprises, in intimate admixture, a tetrafluoroethylene polymer and from 5 to 95% by volume of a cured insoluble polyimide, based on the combined volume of the tetrafluoroethylene polymer and the polyimide, the polyimide being obtained by heating (a) a mixture of (i) an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid of formula R(COOH) 4 or the dianhydride or a corresponding di- or tetra-ester thereof and/or an aromatic tricarboxylic acid in which two of the carboxyl groups are in ortho or peri relationship or the anhydride, mono-, di- or tri-ester thereof and (ii) an acyl, urethane or urea derivative of an aromatic diamine, the derivative having the formula or (b) a prepolymer obtained by heating a mixture of (i) and (ii); in which formulµ R is a quadrivalent radical of aromatic character with the carbonyl groups in ortho or peri relationship, B<SP>1</SP> is a bivalent radical of aromatic character, Z and Z<SP>1</SP> are selected from groups of the formulµ -R<SP>III</SP>, -OR<SP>IV</SP>, wherein R<SP>III</SP> is a monovalent aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>IV</SP> and R<SP>V</SP> are monovalent aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radicals which are free from terminal or pendant methylene groups, and R<SP>VI</SP> is a bivalent aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical free from pendant methylene groups. Reference is made to Specifications 1,214,642 and 1,215,481 in respect of the preparation of the polyimides. In the examples, cured polyimides are prepared from diaminodiphenyl methane, acetic acid, acetic anhydride, benzophenone 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>-tetracarboxylic dianhydride, pyromellitic dianhydride, m-phenylene diacetyl diamine, bis-(4- ethoxycarbonylaminophenyl) methane, bis-(4- isopropoxycarbonylaminophenyl) methane, 1,3- di - (ethoxycarbonylamino) benzene, bis - (4- ethoxycarbonylaminophenyl) ether, 2,4 - bis- (N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-di-n-propyl ureido) toluene and bis-(4- ethoxycarbonylaminophenyl) sulphone, ground to a powder and compounded with polytetrafluoroethylene, graphite and bronze. Compositions of PTFE, a polyimide made via a polyamic acid, glass fibre, powdered coke, bronze, graphite, and lead oxide are also prepared.
