Abstract

1,216,505. Aromatic polyimides. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 6 Sept., 1968 [6 June, 1967; 26 March, 1968], Nos. 26159/67 and 14590/68. Heading C3R. Novel aromatic polyimides contain repeating units of formula where X represents a direct link or a divalent atom or group and A has the formula where Y is a direct link or a divalent atom or group, at least one of X and Y being a straight chain polyfluoroalkylene group in which at least half of the replaceable hydrogen atoms are substituted by fluorine atoms. X and/or Y may be perfluoroalkylene and X or Y when not polyfluoroalkylene or a direct link may be -O- or -CO-. The polyimides are obtained by reacting diamines or their derivatives with aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides or their derivatives with aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides or their derivatives. In examples, diamines used are 1,5-bis-(3-aminophenyl) decafluoropentane, 1,3 - bis - (3 - aminophenyl) hexafluoropropane and bis-(4-aminophenyl) ether and the dianhydrides used are 1,3-bis-(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride, benzophenone 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP> - tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, bis - (3,4 - dicarboxyphenyl) ether dianhydride and 1,7 - bis - (3,4 - dicarboxyphenyl) tetradecafluoroheptane dianhydride.
