Abstract
1,162,203. Polyamide acids; polyimides. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 3 March, 1967 [6 April, 1966], No. 15292/66. Heading C3R. Polyamide acids are prepared by condensing a dianhydride of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid and an aromatic diamine in a liquid organic medium in which the reactants are sufficiently soluble to undergo polymerization in the liquid phase, but in which the polyamide acid is sufficiently insoluble to precipitate from the reaction medium. The initial reaction medium may be a homogeneous soln. and the solvent may be selected from ethers, ketones, esters and nitriles; examples are: acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, dimethoxyethane, diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran and dioxane. A minor amount, e.g. up to 10% by volume of a more polar solvent, e.g. dimethyl formamide may also be present. Examples of dianhydrides, which may be used in a molar excess of up to 10%, are pyromellitic dianhydride and 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride. The diamine may be added in successive amounts over a period until 90-95 mol per cent has been added and then reaction allowed to proceed for a comparable time before completing the addition. Examples of diamines are 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl ether, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl methane, m-phenylene diamine and p-phenylene diamine. Fibres, films or other shaped objects may be obtained by converting the polyamide acid to a polyimide by thermal or chemical treatment.
