Abstract

1,271,544. Hammers. VULCAN IRON WORKS Inc. 20 May, 1969 [10 June, 1968], No. 25738/69. Heading B3H. [Also in Division E1] In a hammer to drive a tubular pile 28, 29 or 30 a ram 20 is raised by a piston 18 and falls on to an anvil portion 15 of a housing 11, said portion having annular steps 15b, 15c, 15d to suit differing pile diameters. Adjustable fingers 34 align the hammer with the pile. A lifting bail 13 can be detached from "horns" 12, locks comprising balls 54 and retractable cylinders 56 being actuated by fluid in cylinders 60. The piston 18 may be steam driven; semi-rotary valve-elements 40 in a steam chest 39 being actuated by arms 43 engaging with arcuate grooves 41 in the ram Openings 51 vent the cylinder to theatmosphere.
