Abstract

1,271,461. Moulding polyamide articles. MONSANTO CO. 23 April, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 20747/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division D1] A 3-D contoured article comprising bonded continuous or staple nylon filaments in a stressrelaxed and stable state is formed by moulding a corded or air-laid fabric including nylon filaments into a 3-D shape before or after exposing it to a gas such as HCI, HBr, BF 3 , BCl 3 or SO 3 which is absorbed by the filaments. This gas disrupts the intermolecular H-bonds between adjacent -NH-C=O- linkages without affecting the covalent bonds in the polymeric chains. The gas is then desorbed from the filaments while maintaining contact between them so that the filaments are bonded together by the reforming of H-bond between touching filaments. The gas may be desorbed by washing with water or heating above 100‹ C. Nylon 6, 66 and 11 filaments are mentioned. They may be combined with polyester, cotton, rayon, glass or acetate filament. Suitable moulding temperatures and pressures are disclosed in the examples.
