Abstract

A die-casting apparatus comprises a plurality of relatively movable die elements 111, 112, Fig. 3, which when abutting at a parting surface P define a metal feed system which includes a sprue 121, an injection cylinder 135, and a runner 126 leading to a mould cavity 115, means 142 movable to isolate the cylinder 135 from the sprue inlet 122, and a piston 138 for forcing molten metal into the mould cavity 115. The arrangement is such that any solidified metal in the feed system can be extracted at the parting surface when the die is open. Molten metal is poured into the sprue 121 until the injection cylinder is filled, plunger 145 operated to close off the cylinder from the sprue inlet, and the metal forced into the cavity 115 by movement of piston 138. In an embodiment, Fig. 6, three die elements 411, 412 and 413 are provided, the element 412 being movable; element 413 is slidably mounted on the fixed element 411 by pins 425, but is normally locked to the element 411 by means 426. The two elements 413 and 411 are only moved apart when it is necessary to remove solidified metal from the sprue 435. The plunger 450 acts both as the injection piston and as the means for isolating the sprue inlet 436 from the injection cylinder 441. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, one die element 312 is provided with a frustoconical projection 350 and the other die element 311 is provided with a recess 325 to mate with the projection. Molten metal is poured into the sprue 321, flows through an extension 341 of the sprue formed in the upper surface of the recess 325 into a notch 340 in a face 326 and thus into the injection cylinder 330 and shot well 355. Operation of the plunger 338 closes off the pouring sprue connection and forces the molten metal through a notch 357 and runner segments 360 and 361 into the mould cavity 315. An ejector pin 365 communicates with the base of the shot well 355.
