Abstract

1,270,799. Battery supply systems. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 30 Sept., 1969 [14 Oct., 1968], No. 48523/68. Heading H2H. A system comprising two batteries to be connected together comprises means whereby the connection between the batteries can only be made if the batteries are connected with the correct polarities. The system is applicable to motor vehicles wherein a slave battery may be connected to terminals 16, 17 to assist the vehicle battery connected to terminals 11, 12 when starting the vehicle engine. Each of the terminals 11, 12 comprise two parts 11, 11a; 12, 12a insulated from one another. When the vehicle battery is connected to terminals 11, 12 a relay 14 will be energized, to close contact 23, if the battery has a sufficient charge still remaining and if the battery is connected with the correct polarity so that diode 13 conducts. When the slave battery is connected to terminals 16, 17 the coil 22 of an electromagnetic contactor will be energized if the battery is connected with the correct polarity so that diode 24 is conductive. Energization of coil 22 closes contactor 21 to connect the batteries together whereupon a relay 32 is energized to open contacts 33 to insert a resistor 31 in the energizing circuit of coil 22, thus providing a relatively high pull-in current and a lower maintaining current for the coil 22.
