Abstract

1,270,793. Coated sheet materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 June, 1969 [11 June, 1968; 16 Aug., 1968], Nos. 27779/68 and 39267/68. Heading B2E. A process for the production of a painted planar polymeric article comprises the steps of pressing an advancing sheet of thermoplastic polymeric material the surface of which is in heat-softened form against a substrate moving in the same direction and at the same speed as said sheet and to which substrate has been applied a continuous or discontinuous paint coating, maintaining contact between the advancing sheet and the moving painted substrate for sufficient distance to effect transfer of the paint coating from the substrate to the sheet and thereafter parting the sheet from the substrate and causing or allowing the surface of the thermoplastic polymeric material to cool below the softening point thereof during or after its contact with the painted substrate. A paint is defined as being a composition, comprising a pigment dispersed in a film-forming medium. The thermoplastic polymeric material may comprise a polymer or copolymer of ethylene, propylene and/or 4-methyl-pentene-1, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene or polyacrylonitrile, a copolymer of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile, a polyamide, a polyester or a polymeric blend e.g. a blend of an acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymer with a polycarbonate or a vinyl chloride polymer. The substrate may be in the form of a roller, an endless belt, a tape or a ribbon and may comprise a silicone rubber, a release paper or polyethylene terephthalate film. A release layer may be provided between the surface of the substrate and the paint coating. The paint may be oil based or water based, specified film-forming media being cellulosic materials, acrylics, alkyds, polyurethanes and polymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride. The paint coating may be applied to the moving sheet by electrostatic spraying, compressed air spraying, brushing, weir coating, dipping, doctor coating or air knife coating. The process may be operated to coat one or both surfaces of the sheet of thermoplastic polymeric material, pressure being applied by two co-operating rollers.
