Abstract

1369612 Coating lay-flat tubular plastics film IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 7910/71 Headings B2E and B2L Tubular plastics film in lay-flat form is coated by extruding onto one or both sides of the external surface a plurality of longitudinal, parallel, evenly-spaced lines of the coating material in softened, extrudable form, the lines being deposited at the same rate, applying to the coated surface a pressure sufficient to spread and merge the deposited lines to cover the surface, and causing or allowing the coating to solidify. The tubing may be of polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene, an ethylene or propylene copolymer with another olefine, or a polycarbonate and may be oriented by stretching before or after coating. The coating, which may be applied as a solution, dispersion or emulsion, or as a melt, may be of vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile copolymer. Apparatus for effecting the coating comprises a number of nozzles 5 equally spaced apart across the width of the film, means such as driven nip rollers for advancing the tubular film in lay-flat form lengthwise past the nozzles to receive parallel, spaced lines of coating material and means such as a roller 10 to apply sufficient pressure to spread and merge the deposited lines of material to form a coating of uniform thickness. The apparatus may further comprise a supply reservoir 7 for the coating material, a peristaltic pump 8 and a pressure reservoir 2.
