[Also in Divisions B2 and G5] A decorative finish is applied to an article of a synthetic thermoplastic organic polymeric material by applying to the surface of a liquid medium a hardenable liquid composition that is immiscible with and which will float upon the liquid medium to form a thin layer of the hardenable liquid composition on the surface of the liquid medium and thereafter transferring the layer of the hardenable liquid composition on to the surface of the article. The hardenable liquid composition is an oil-based paint or a paint comprising a dispersion of a pigment in a solution of a polymeric binder, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate. The preferred liquid supporting medium is water. The layer of the hardenable liquid composition may be lifted from the supporting liquid medium by means of the article which may have been immersed in the liquid medium, or the article may be pressed in contact with the layer of hardenable liquid composition. Synthetic thermoplastic organic poly. meric materials mentioned are polymers and copolymers of esters of acrylic, methacrylic acids, polymers of vinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride with, say, vinyl acetate, alkyl acrylates, vinylidene chloride, and polystyrene. A protective layer may be applied to the coated surface by spraying or by laminating a further sheet thereto. The article may be in the form of a sheet shaped by, e.g., vacuum forming or blow moulding after a decorative layer has been applied, or the decorative effects may be applied after shaping. Portions of this surface of the article may be masked, and several applications of decorative layers may be made either of the same or different hardenable liquid compositions. Examples of decorative articles made are bowl lamp shades, panels, signs for advertisements.
