Abstract

1,270,768. Soil-resistant synthetic fibres. HERCULES Inc. 7 Aug., 1970 [13 Aug., 1969], No. 38132/70. Heading D1P. A method of improving soil resistance of polypropylene fibres comprises applying to the fibre a mixture of a poly(aminosiloxane) and a polyfunctional carboxylic acid and curing the mixture to effect partial crosslinking of the applied mixture. The polyaminosiloxane has the general formula where x = 2 to 25, y= 0.5x to 3.0x, R and R' are alkylene radicals containing 1 to 3 C atoms and R" is a methyl or ethyl group. 1-10% by weight of the mixture as a crosslinked poler film is applied to the fibre. The poly(amino siloxane) and poly carboxylic acid are added as solutions in an inert volatile solvent, the polycarboxylic acid being added in concentrations such that the ratio of COOH to amine and alkoxy groups is at least 3 to 1, and the 100 to 120‹C to remove the solvent and effect a reaction between a reaction between the poly(aminosiloxane) and the poly carboxylic acid; curing is complete in 5 to 20 mins. The fibre may be polypropylene blended with cotton and examples of the acid in crosslinking are acrylic and citric arid malonic acids.
