Hose and flexible pipes.-A hose-pipe for conveying petrol, oil, &c. has a woven fabric lining adherent to the rubber of the hose-pipe and coated or impregnated with a dope or varnish of known kind impervious to the petrol &c. An armouring of helical wire between two layers of impregnated fabric may be added. A seamless woven cotton or other fabric tube 1 is drawn on to a clean mandrel, the outer surface is treated with rubber solution, and a thin layer of petrol-resisting rubber 2 is added. A single ply of impregnated fabric 3 is applied, a wire 4 is wound in place and covered with impregnated fabric 5, and the whole bound with string, compressing the covering 5 between the convolutions of the wire. The tube is then vulcanized and the string and mandrel removed. One or more coatings of impregnating- material are then applied to the inner surface of the fabric 1 by means of a brush, by spraying, or by filling the tube and allowing the surplus to drain away. Nitrocellulose, oxidized oil, and a mixture of glue and glycerine are mentioned as suitable known impregnating-materials.
