Abstract
1,270,392. Plastics pipes. BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd. 21 April, 1969 [25 April, 1968], No. 19630/68. Heading F2P. A land drainage tube is made of a cellular plastics material, the wall of the tube being provided with a plurality of apertures each of which increases in size from the outside surface of the tube to the inside surface. The tube, made for instance of cellular polystyrene with a density not greater than 4À5 lb./cu. foot, has, as shown, apertures which have a uniform increase of width and which preferably extend, as inverse wedge slits, transversely relative to the axis of the tube. The exterior surface of the tube may be fluted the apertures being provided in the valleys between the flutes. The apertures may be formed by heating a probe 1 to a temperature between 180-500‹ C., and preferably between 250-350‹ C., with the leading edge of the probe hotter than the remainder or, by heating a punch from 75-125‹ C. Alternatively, the apertures may be formed by electric arcing, the tube containing electrically conductive material; by radio frequency discharge; by a diverging infra-red beam; or by a cone or wedge-shaped jet of heated compressed air. The apertures may also be formed by inserting a probe into the tube wall from the outside and either by causing to probe to vibrate or, by pivoting the heated probe about a point immediately above the outer surface of the tube.
