Abstract
1,270,042. Interference filter. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 29, 1970, No. 25934/70. Heading G2J. An optical interference band pass filter includes optically in series two band-pass filter units 1 and 2 which have different "effective refractive indices" but which present the same pass-band centre wavelength for light incident at one particular angle of incidence (e.g. normal incidence), so that the filter effectively transmits light incident at this one angle only. Such a filter for use in the visible or near infrared comprises seventeen layers H, L of zinc sulphide (Á = 2À3) and cryolite (Á = 1À3), each one quarter of a wavelength # thick, deposited by evaporation on a glass substrate S; the units 1, 2 respectively contain dielectric spacers L, H of thickness 5/2 # and 3/2 # sandwiched between stacks HLH and HLHL, and are separated by an L layer. A similar filter for use in the infrared comprises layers of germanium (Á = 4) and silicon monoxide (Á = 1À8) upon a sapphire (Á = 1À65) substrate Fig. 3 (not shown).
