Abstract

1,269,949. Terminating electric cables; welding by pressure. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd. 20 Jan., 1970 [11 Nov., 1968], No. 53373/68. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division H2] A cable joint or termination utilizes a connecting piece comprising two metal parts 2, 3 friction -or flash-butt welded together part 2 being embedded in and secured to cast epoxy resin body 1 and being of a metal such as aluminium having a coefficient of thermal expansion sufficiently close to that of the resin, and part 3 being of a metal such as copper having an unsuitable coefficient of thermal expansion but being more suitable than the metal of part 2 for joining to the cable. As shown a cable conductor 7 is connected to the composite metal member 2, 3 by means of a copper ferrule 7 into which is crimped on to the conductor and copper part 3, and for making a joint, the composite member comprises an aluminium rod with a copper rod attached at each end. The conductor may alter- natively be attached by brazing, welding or soldering. The joint also comprises paper insula- tion 9, electrostatic screen 11 sleeves 12 linked by conductor 16 and connected to the cable sheaths and means 15 for evacuating and filling with oil.
