Abstract
126,992. Hulin, P. L. July 17, 1915, [Convention date]. Chlorine is separated from gaseous mixtures by absorption in a solution of a lower chloride such as ferrous chloride or cuprous chloride, or a mixture of such chlorides, and by electrolyzing the product, acidified by hydrochloric acid, to regenerate pure chlorine and the lower chloride for reuse. The chlorine obtained may be liquefied. The original gaseous mixture may be that obtained by the Deacon process, or by the electrolysis of fused chlorides of alkali and alkaline-earth metals. In the latter case it may be scrubbed with water to remove fumes, mainly chlorides, and then passed up one or more earthenware towers down which flows the absorbent solution. The initial solution may contain 30 per cent of ferrous chloride, but after complete conversion to ferric chloride only a part, say a third, of this salt is reduced by electrolysis, in order to avoid the production of iron and hydrogen.
