Abstract

1,269,699. Polyphosphinic acids and esters. MONSANTO CO. 28 Aug., 1969 [29 Aug., 1968; 31 Oct., 1968], No. 42900/69. Heading C2P. [Also in Division C5] Novel polyphosphinic esters and the corresponding acids and salts having the formulµ in which Z is an aliphatic group having 1-24 C atoms or a cycloaliphatic group having 5-12 carbon atoms, and n is an integer that is 2 or greater are obtained by heating a chloromethylphosphonous acid diester ClCH 2 P(OR) 2 in an inert atmosphere to split off RCl and from a polymeric compound having the formula where m is an integer, and oxidizing the resulting compound. The diesters may also be made by reacting ClCH 2 PCl 2 with an alcohol ROH in the presence of a hydrochloric acid binding agent at a temperature not greater than 0‹ C. with the exclusion of moisture and oxygen. The compounds may be used as flameproofing agents, detergents, and additives to gasoline and lubricants.
