Diacetyl-malonic acid diesters of the formula in which R represents a branched or unbranched saturated aliphatic or araliphatic residue 1-8 carbon atoms, or in particular diacetyl-malonic acid dimethyl, dibutyl. di-(2-ethylhexyl), and dibenzyl esters, are prepared by reacting a malonic or acetylmalonic acid diester with ketene at from 0- 200‹ C. A catalyst such as an alkali metal salt of formic, acetic, chloracetic, butyric, sulphoacetic, phenol, methanol or ethanol may be used in a solvent such as hydrocarbon, a chlorinated hydrocarbon or a carbonic acid ester.
