Abstract

1,245,029. Phenylacetic acid and its esters. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 24 March, 1969 [25 March, 1968], No. 16252/69. Heading C2C. Phenylacetic acid or an ester thereof is prepared by reacting benzyl chloride with carbon monoxide and with a hydroxy compound ROH, wherein R is a hydrogen atom of a hydrocarbyl C 1-12 radical, in the presence of a catalytic system formed of nickel carbonyl and bromide or iodide ions in solution in a basic polar solvent e.g. DMF, DMSO, hexamethyl-phosphor-triamide or tetra methyl urea, preferably in the presence of an acid binding agent e.g. MgO, CaO, MgCO 3 and CaCO 3 . In examples phenylacetic acid and its methyl, amyl, phenyl esters are prepared; benzyl phenyl acetate is formed as a by-product.
