Abstract

1,269,598. Jointing; forging; repairing metal articles. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 1 Oct., 1970, No. 46807/70. Headings B3A, B3H B3R and B3V. In repairing a worn or damaged metal article e.g. a fan or turbine blade 10, a standardized portion 44 including an affected part 22 is cut out using one of a set of standard templates and replaced by one of a standard set of parts, the replacement part being integrally joined to the blade by solid state molecular diffusion bonding. The bonding is carried out under vacuum conditions in a two-piece mould having workfaces exactly matching the faces of an undamaged blade. In the case of titanium a pressure of 1000 p.s.i. is applied for 24 hours at 1600‹ F. With a Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy of composition 5À5-6À5% Al, 3À5-4À5% V, 0À08-0À1% C, 0À10-0À012% H and balance Ti, the pressure is 2000-5000 p.s.i., the time 8-16 hours and the temperature 1650-1725‹ F. The vacuum is 1 x 10<SP>-4</SP> min. Hg. or less. Other suitable metals are Al, stainless steel, Ni, Ta, Mo, Zr and Nb. The replacement parts are preferably slightly oversize in order to ensure the presence of a lateral force necessary for the solid state bonding to occur. A reference is made to the possibility of using a thin interleaf material or eutectic former in solid state bonding.
