Effervescent compositions comprise glutaric acid and a carbonic acid salt (which together with an acid is capable of providing an effervescent composition), e.g. sodium bicarbonate. The composition may also contain a flavouring agent, a medicament (e.g. aspirin), sweetener, colouring agent and/or a bulking agent. The composition may be in the form of a tablet or in an envelope.
