Abstract
1,269,133. Lens systems. RANK ORGANISATION Ltd. July 14, 1970 [July 16, 1969], No. 35797/69. Heading G2J. An optical objective comprises a "Cooke triplet formation" I, II, III and a divergent component IV axially spaced behind the rear surface of the triplet by 0‹25-0‹75F where F is the equivalent focal length of the complete objective, all the components being made of light-transmitting synthetic resins, and the triplet including an aspheric surface. The term "Cooke triplet formation" refers to a substantially anastigmatic Cooke triplet which is in itself fully corrected apart from a large Petzval sum, or to an assembly of three components having the appearance of a Cooke triplet, but which in itself is not substantially anastigmatic, the presence of the divergent component being necessary for reduction in the Petzval sum and also for completing correction of other aberations. The aspheric surface is preferably the front surface of the third component. When the divergent component is spaced at least 0À2F from the image plane, the triplet is modified so that the four components are corrected in conjunction. When the divergent component is less than 0À2F from the image plane, the triplet is selfcorrecting. The two outer components of the triplet and the divergent component may be of polymethyl methacrylate, and the centre component of the triplet of polystyrene. Optical data are given for three examples. The objective preferably has an external stop in front of the Cooke triplet, and two such objectives may be arranged to share a common diaphragm to form a copying or relay lens.
