Abstract

867,251. Optical systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov 11, 1959 [Dec. 5, 1958], No. 39377/58. Class 97(1) An optical system includes a first reflecting surface designed to form an upright, virtual, and diminished image of a distant object, and having a central aperture, and a second, relatively small, reflecting surface, facing the first reflecting surface and spaced from it, and which is designed to form an upright, virtual, and diminished image of the first image, which second image can be viewed through the aperture in the first reflecting surface. As shown, the system includes a convex mirror 2 with a central aperture 3, this mirror forming an upright virtual and diminished image at 9 of a distant object. An upright virtual, diminished image of the image at 9 is formed at 10 by a second and smaller convex mirror 4 which is formed on a negative meniscus lens 5 so as to leave a central aperture 6. A final image is formed at infinity by lens 7 of the image which has been formed by reflection and of the image formed by lens 5 so that a single unbroken image is presented to the camera at 1. Supporting struts may extend between the reflecting surfaces but, preferably, the mirror 4 is formed on a body which is attached to or is integral with a transparent dome attached at its periphery either to the mirror 2 or to the body which supports the mirror 2. The system may be designed for use as a periscopic system by providing a tube coaxial with the system extending backwards from the aperture 3, this tube having mounted therein the lens 7 and further lenses.
