Novel compounds of Formula I (in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 1-6 alkyl groups which may be concatenated together, R is H, a nitrogen oxygen or sulphur containing group or a substituted or unsubstituted, aliphatic hydrocarbyl group, e.g. R is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, chloroalkyl, chloroalkenyl, phenalkyl, aldehydo, amino, acyl, nitroso, amidino, hydroxyalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, aminoalkyl, amino-substituted phenalkyl, alkanoyloxyalkyl or alkoxycarbonyl. alkyl, and R<SP>3</SP> is H, nitro, amino, halogen, hydroxy or etherified or esterified hydroxy) and acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts and N-oxides thereof, are prepared by reducing a compound of Formula II and, if desired, converting a substituent R and/or R<SP>3</SP> into another such substituent. Starting materials of Formula II are prepared by reacting a compound of Formula III with an amine of formula RNH 2 , and cyclizing the resulting amide of Formula IV: Pharmaceutical compositions having analgesic activity, for oral or parenteral administration, comprise a compound of Formula I, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, together with a pharmaceutical carrier.
