Limbs, artificial.-Comprises a special construction of apparatus for effecting the locking of a knee-joint through the instrumentality of a band brake, actuated by relative movement of the jointed parts when the weight is thrown on the leg. In the present construction, the band c3 has a spring connexion with the leg at the lower end and a guided sliding connexion with the thigh at the upper end. The brake comprises a fixed jaw d* and a pivoted jaw d actuated by a lever c connected by a link a<2> with the knee-joint pivot. When the weight is thrown on the leg, the pivot moves downwardly in the slots h<1>, and tends to rotate the lever c. During this operation, the periphery k<3> of a wheel acts as a fixed abutment for a pin k<2> on the lever, which thus fulcrums about this pin and moves the jaw d into its acting position against the action of the spring m<6>. When the sound leg is moved forward to take a step, the consequent bending of the body is used through body harness to actuate a cord m<5>, and thus rotate a lever m<2> against the action of a spring m<3>. This action allows the wheel to move to the upper end of its slotted bearing k<5>, thus releasing the pin k<2> and allowing the jaw d to be restored by the spring m<6>. The artificial leg, being thus unlocked, is lifted to take a step, and the leg portion falling by gravity relatively to the thigh portion restores the lever c to its original position ready for the succeeding step. The strain on the cord m<5> is also released and the lever m<2> restored as the artificial legs is moved forward.
