Abstract

1,268,440. Fire retardant foams. MIDWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE. 17 June, 1969, No. 30694/69. Headings C3C and C3R. Fire retardant foams are prepared by reacting a methylol resin which is the reaction product of a methylol resin former and formaldehyde, the reaction product having a pH of not less than 3.0, and having water present in an amount not in excess of 10% by weight, with an aromatic polyisocyanate in the ratio of 0.6 to 5 parts by weight of methylol resin to every part by weight of polyisocyanate in the presence of an alkaline medium. The methylol resin former is suitably phenol, melamine, urea, aniline or p-toluenesulphonamide, In the examples, the polyisocyanate used is a polyphenylmethylisocyanate. A catalyst such as a tin, zinc, sodium or mercury compound or a tertiary amine may be added. Concentrated ammonium hydroxide may provide the alkaline medium.
