1,268,420. Catalyst fibres and felts; postcombustion devices. SOC. GENERALE DES PRODUITS REFRACTAIRES. 22 Aug., 1969 [23 Aug., 1968], No. 42090/69. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C1] Refractory polycrystalline support-fibres of 2-40Á average diameter, formed of separate crystals of 20-40Š average diameter, composed principally of alumina and/or zirconia, containing 0-15% SiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , MnO 2 , K 2 O and Na 2 O in an amount individually of 0-0.1%, and on the whole of 0- 0.5% (all percentages are by weight), are made into felts which may be impregnated with catalyst and then used in post-combustion devices. (For suitable preparative processes see e.g. U.K. Specifications 1,228,243 and 1,217,828). In the example fibres comprising alumina with 5% SiO 2 , 0.1% Na 2 O and traces of Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 , were made into a felt which was impregnated with aqueous solutions of platinum chloride and thioacetamide; the felt was then dried and heated to 800‹C to activate the platinum. A purifying device placed on an engine was formed of a metallic cylinder 200mm in diameter containing a 130mm piling of impregnated refractory felt plates (formed from fibres of the invention) comprising 36 channels of 12mm in diameter, the piling being maintained in place between two refractory steel grates; a collection chamber for engine gases was formed by a 70mm prolongation of the metallic cylinder above the upper grate, and the gas admission was tangential to the cylinder.
