Abstract

1,268,227. Metallized ceramic/rubber composites. COORS PORCELAIN CO. 31 March, 1969, No. 16713/69. Headings C3E and C3Q. [Also in Division C7] - An organic resin-ceramic composite is made by contacting a ceramic piece with a body of solid metal with sufficient force and relative motion to cause metal to be rubbed on to and bonded to said ceramic piece and then bonding organic resin to the resultant metallized surface of said ceramic piece. The ceramic is preferably a sintered alumina-based ceramic which may contain silica, clay, talc, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal oxides, carbonates or phosphates, or oxides of Cr, Mn, or rare earth elements, but may be a beryllium oxide or zirconium oxide ceramic, and may be in the form of plates, rods, spheres, or random chippings. The coating metal is preferably Ti or Zr, but may be Al, Cu, Fe, Sn, Zn, Mg, brass or steel, and is applied to the ceramic either by tumbling the two together in a rotating barrel, by a rotating wire brush, or by shot-blasting the appropriate metal using the ceramic. The size of the ceramic particles is preferably greater than 100 mesh Tyler, and for coating with Ti or Zr, the surface roughness is less than 10 RMS microinches, but greater than 10 for the other metals. The organic resin is preferably an elastomer such as natural rubber. The resin is vulcanized or cured in contact with the metallized ceramic pieces by conventional means, the volume of ceramic being preferably not more than 20 times the matrix volume. The metal coating on the ceramic is preferably discontinuous, to achieve better ceramic-resin adhesion, and in the barrel coating process, where the metal is Ti or Zr, a nitrogen atmosphere is used to eliminate fire hazards. Fig. 2 shows metal-coated ceramic particles 2 embedded in a matrix of resin 4.
