Abstract

1,268,029. Coated products. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 6 Aug., 1970 [29 Sept., 1969], No. 37908/70. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] A single crystal ferromagnetic film is made by depositing on a R 3 Al 5 O 12 garnet substrate (R is Y or a rare-earth metal of atomic number 58-71 inclusive) having a [111] or [100] orientation, a film of bd 3-x M x Fe 12 O 12 (M is Tb or Dy) and crystallising the deposited film. When the substrate orientation is [111], X is 0.1 to 0.6 when M is Tb, and 0.1 to 1.7 when M is Dy. When the substrate orientation is [100], X is 1 to 2.7 when M is Tb and 0.27 to 1.7 when M is Dy. The film may be made by sputtering, using the composition to be deposited as the cathode of the sputtering system. A two-cathode technique may be used. Alternatively, the film may be made by "spinning". In this embodiment, a concentrated solution of metal salts, e.g. nitrates, is diluted with ethanol and dripped onto a horizontally rotating substrate. The nitrate film, which is dry after 15-20 secs. spinning, is heated at 300-500‹C to decompose it to a glassy oxide film about 1000Š thick. After repeating the process to obtain a film of desired thickness, e.g. 1Á Œ 0.2Á, the oxide film is heated at 650-800‹C to cause crystallisation to a garnet structure. The product has a square hysteresis loop and a compensation temperature above 250‹F.
