A gas lighter comprises an igniting head 1 in the form of a double-armed lever formed integrally by casting or moulding and pivotally mounted to rock about a pin 2 mounted in a lug 3a on the lighter body 3, one arm 7 of the head 1 carrying a knurled roller 5 co-operating with a pyrophoric stone 18, the other arm carrying a cap-shaped closure member 8 co-operable with a gas outlet 9, under the action of a spring 17 which also biases the pyrophoric stone 18 against the roller 5, so that when downward pressure is applied to the roller 5 to rotate it the head 1 rocks against the action of the spring 17 so that the arm 7 bears against a stop 19 and the closure cap 8 is raised allowing gas to escape from the outlet 9, Fig. 4, the lever returning to its rest position, Fig. 1, when the pressure is released from the arm 7. The cap 8 co-operates sealingly with an 0-ring seal 11 which surrounds a neck 10 projecting from the lighter body 3 and surrounding the outlet 9 and in the rest position. Fig. 1, the wall 13 of the cap bears upon a flat resilient seal 15 which closes the outlet. In the ignition position gas escapes around the seal 15 assisted by grooves 14 in the top wall 13 of the cap 8 and escapes through an outlet 16 in the top of the cap 8 where the gas is ignited by a spark from the pyrophoric stone 18.
