In the construction shown the body comprises a flanged metal base plate 12 and a synthetic resin moulded casing 11 in which the recess is formed, the metal base plate 12 in use lies flat against the face of the door with its flanges 13 protruding and the handle 14 has a root portion 15 which is located between the base plate 12 and the casing 11; the root portion 15 is formed with a pair of parallel grooves of semicircular cross section and is secured in position within the body by means of a pair of rods 16 which are inserted through holes in one end of the casing 12 and aligned holes in the adjacent one of the flanges 13 and are engaged respectively in the grooves in the root portion 15 pass through aligned holes in the other one of the flanges 13 are engaged in the partition 17 in the casing 12 either by means of coacting screw threads or by snap action; the handle 14 projects through a slot in the casing 11. An internally screw threaded sleeve 18 projects through a hole 19 in the base plate 12 and has a head fitting in a recess in the handle 14; the screw threaded sleeve 18 is engaged in use by a screw 20 secured to another handle 21 which is intended to be disposed on the opposite face of the door to the door fastening means. The base plate 12 may have one or more further holes for receiving screws for securing it to the door. The recess 22 is formed in the casing beyond the partition 17 and it has a pair of overhanging abutments 23; an adjusting screw 24 is provided for acting upon one abutment 23 to urge it towards the other to vary the spacing. The keeper 25 has a mounting flange 26 and a pair of fingers 27 projecting from the flange; the fingers have rounded ends receivable with snap action between the abutment 23 in the recess 22. In a modification the carries a slidable bolt 28 which is secured atone end to a finger piece 29 projecting through a slot in the lower edge of the casing. The opposite end portion of the bolt engages an apertured recess in an extension 30 of the keeper.
