[Also in Division A1] A composition for rendering a female pig responsive to the back pressure test when in oestrus comprises 5α-androst-16-en-3-one and/ or 3α-hydroxy-5α-androst-16-ene and an inert carrier which will enable the steroid compound to be presented to the pig and detected by the sense of smell. The carrier is preferably a sprayable powder or liquid and the composition may be in the form of an aerosol. A process for the artificial insemination of female pigs includes the step of introducing into the environment of the female pig immediately prior to testing for oestrus response one of the above specified steroids.
