A stabilizing apparatus mounted on the chassis 1 of a civil engineering machine comprises two pairs of props 6 and 7, and 8 and 9 respectively pivotally connected to the chassis 1, props 6 and 7 being pivotally movable with respect to the chassis 1 by means of an hydraulic ram 13 (or rams) to a stabilizing position where the props 6 and 7 are held by a rigid connection such as a second hydraulic ram 14 directly or indirectly linked with the props 6 and 7 and the chassis 1. As shown, the hydraulic ram 13 is connected between arms 6a and 7a of props 6 and 7, and the rigid connection hydraulic ram 14 is held between the arm 7a and an element 32 fast with the chassis 1. A cock 64 between the two chambers 61 and 62 of the ram 14 remains open during pivotal movement of props 6 and 7 by the ram 13 into contact with the ground whereupon cock 64 is closed to thereby hold the props 6 and 7 in this position. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), each of the props 6 and 7 has an hydraulic ram, each of which is also connected to a single arm pivotally connected to the chassis, the rigid connection comprising a third hydraulic ram between this arm and an element fast with the chassis. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), each of the props has an hydraulic ram each connected to a respective one of a pair of arms pivotally connected to the chassis, the rigid connection comprising a further pair of hydraulic rams each connected to only one of this pair of arms and to an element fast with the chassis. As shown in Fig. 1, the props 6 and 7 are mounted near to a rocking axle 11 on the chassis 1 and props 8 and 9 are mounted near a fixed axle 10, and props 8 and 9 may also be controlled by modified forms of the three embodiments described, wherein props 8 and 9 are not lockably held in stabilizing positions.
