Abstract
1,266,829. Sizing paper. HERCULES Inc. 24 June, 1970, No. 30727/70. Headings D2A and D2B. 0.15-2% of a rosin emulsion size (which term includes emulsions of rosin adducts), having an amount of unsaponified rosin (represented as a percentage of available carboxyl groups that have not been saponified), of 80- 98%; from 0.15-0.5% alum; and from 0.01- 0.25% of a water-soluble cationic polyamine having a molecular weight in excess of 1000 are added to an aqueous pulp suspension at a consistency of 1.5-3% and pH 6-7.5, the pH maintained at this figure, and the pulp sheeted. The rosin emulsion is preferably added before the polyamine. The rosin emulsion may be 70-55% water, and 30-45% rosinbase material, which material comprises 0- 95% rosin and 100-5% of an adduct of rosin and an acidic compound containing the -#C=#C-#C=O group. The polyamine may be a polymer having -CH 2 CH 2 NH- linkages e.g. polyethyleneimine, cationic starch, polyvinylamine, polyvinylpyridine, poly-N-methyl pyridinium chloride, urea-formaldehyde-polyalkylenepolyamines, and thermosettable aminopolyamide-epichlorohydrin resins. The rosin emulsions may contain an emulsifier e.g. casein. The pulp suspension may be diluted with white water after addition of the above materials and then screened, e.g. by centrifugal cleaners or conventional screens.
