Abstract

1373788 Sizing paper HERCULES POWDER CO Ltd 16 Oct 1972 [20 Oct 1971] 48856/71 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] A paper-sizing composition comprises a ketene dimer and a water-soluble dicyandiamide-formaldehyde condensate. An emulsifier, e.g. a cationic starch or epichlorhydrin-modified dicarboxylic acid/polyalkylene polyamine polyamide, may be present. Preferably the composition consists of 1-12% ketene dimer, 1-25% condensate, 1-25% emulsifier and 70-97% water, by weight. In the Examples there is used an aqueous emulsion containing 6wt% of a tetradecyl/hexadecyl ketene dimer with 3% of dimethylaminoethyl potato starch or 10% of diethylene triamine/adipic acid/epichlorhydrin as emulsifier; 80 pbw of this emulsion is mixed with 20 pbw of a commercial 50% solution of a dicyandiamide-formaldehyde condensate or a solution of a dicyandiamide-formaldehydeammonium chloride condensate. In Examples 3 and 6 such a composition is added to e.g. a softwood sulphite pulp containing 14% china clay, to give 0.12% of ketene dimer relative to the fibres in the pulp.
