Abstract
126,680. Dodson, P. L. H., and Hugh, P. G. Feb. 9, 1917. Winches; brakes for winding and paying-out apparatus; constant-tension and tension-regulating winding and paying-out apparatus; laying or guiding cables on or off during winding or unwinding on motor-vehicles; control-transmitting gear; fair-leads; guide pulleys and rollers.-Relates to winches for hauling in or paying out the cables attached to a kite or observation balloon. The apparatus is mounted on a frame 10 supported by feet 11<1> which can be secured to a lorry or ship, and may be covered with a weather-proof fabric placed over a frame 81, or protected by sand bags. The winding drum 29 and brake drum 27 are rotatably mounted on a shaft 30, and the ends of the brake band 31 are connected to the periphery of one of the flanges of the drum 29 by spring tension devices 32, so that these drums can rotate at different speeds. The drum 27 is driven through bevel gears 26, 25 from a shaft 24 in which is a slipping ratchet or clutch 28. The shaft 24 is driven through bevel gears 23, 22 from a shaft 19 provided with brakes 21, 66 and driven through the mechanism of a change-bear box 18 from the main driving-shaft 15. A clutch 16 connects the shaft 15 to an internal-combustion engine 12 or to a steam, electric, compressed air, or hydraulic motor. The tension of the brake 66 can be varied by adjusting the spring tension device 69. One end of the shaft 19 is connected by @ coupling 43 to an oil pump 44 which is connected to an oil reservoir 47 by pipes 45, 46. A valve 48 is placed in one of the pipes and is normally open, but can be closed to cause the pump to act as a brake, should the other brakes fail to act. The cable is guided during winding &c. by a pulley 42 which moves along a shaft 39 driven through worm and bevel gearing by the winding drum 29. The worm &c. can be changed readily in order that cables of different diameters may be used. Grooved surge drums 53, 54 driven by gearing from the shaft 19 are mounted on ball or roller bearings on shafts 57, 52, respectively. The retaining pulley on the surge drums is arranged so that by eccentric adjustments it may be adapted to accommodate a cable of any diameter. Guidewheels 60, 61, 62, 63, 64 are placed adjacent the grooves in the drums 53, 54 and guide-pulleys 59, 42. A counterweighted leading-off frame 72 is rotatably mounted in bearings 70, 71 and has mounted in it a guide-pulley 73, two guide-pulleys 74, 75 with their peripheries in contact, and two parallel rollers 76, 77. An idler pulley 79 actuates a tension indicator 80. The controls of the clutches, brakes, &c. are all located on the same side of the frame. When hauling in the cable, the drum 29 is rotated to store the cable faster than the surge drums 53, 54 haul it in, but when the tension reaches a predetermined amount, relative movement between the shafts 24, 19 occurs, and the cable is wound at constant tension
