Abstract

Cooling.-To cuol the spindle of an engine valve, the spindle is made with a bore or two diameters so as to act as a pump to circulate air or oil through the spindle. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the hollow spindle has a lower part h adapted to work in a guide e and an upper reduced part adapted to carry the spring abutment m. The upper part has air holes p and is fitted with a copper tube i extending nearly to the head of the valve. The copper tube is provided externally with a series of longitudinal ribs j, the passages so formed communicating with holes o in the shoulder of the spindle. During the opening movement of the valve, air is drawn into the chamber r through the ports p or through special inlet ports s, and is ejected through the ports p as the valve closes. In a modification, the ports p and s lead to an oil reservoir.
