Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a burner apparatus for use as a fuel injection system for a furnace, four coaxial conduits 1, 2, 3 and 4 define fuel paths from fuel inlets 18, 19, 20 to a mixing chamber 8 defined by a nozzle 13; the fuel paths open into the mixing chamber through Venturi shaped path sections 11, 12 and a metering gap 16, the conduits being adapted for relative longitudinal movement to vary the Venturi shaped path sections 11, 12 and the gap 16 by means of annular coupling sets 5, 5a, 5b, 6, 6a, 6b, 7, 7a and 7b. In the embodiment shown, air or oxygen is supplied via inlets 18 and 19, and liquid fuel via inlet 20. A metering nozzle 14 is provided to regulate the flow of liquid fuel from conduit 4, any excess liquid fuel which does not flow through the gap 16 between the nozzle and the conduit 3 flowing back along the conduit 3. A cooling jacket la may be provided for the burner, which may have an inlet and outlet 1b or, if air is to be used as the cooling fluid, an inlet 1b and an opening at 1e adjacent the nozzle 13. The burner may be used for liquid, gaseous or pulverulent fuel, or combinations of these.
