Abstract

1,266,067. Lasers. FERRANTI Ltd. 6 Nov., 1970 [12 Dec., 1969], No. 60658/69. Heading H1C. In a folded gas-discharge laser, two side-byside and parallel gas discharge zones 10, 11 are optically coupled by a three element corner cube reflector 15, 16, 17, each of the reflector elements consisting of a spherical concave mirror. All the elements of the reflector have the same radius of curvature, which may be approximately ten times the length of a discharge zone, while the corner cube reflector is inclined by an angle of approximately 35 degrees to the axes of the discharge zones. Each discharge zone 10, 11 comprises a respective gas-filled tube terminated at one end by a resonator mirror 18, 19, the two tubes being coupled by an enclosure 12 in which the corner cube reflector is located. Gas discharge in each tube is produced by a respective electrode pair 13, 14, the electrodes adjacent the corner cube reflector being at the same potential to avoid creating a gas discharge in the enclosure 12. The laser gas may be carbon dioxide, helium and nitrogen in continuous flow.
